New to an iPhone? You do not need to learn everything at once. Start with these everyday skills and practice at your own pace.
What is an app?
An app is a program on your phone. Mail, Messages, Photos and Camera are apps. Tap an icon to open it. Swipe up from the bottom edge (or press the Home button on older phones) to return to the Home Screen.
Find your settings
Open the gray gear-shaped Settings app. Use its search field to find Wi-Fi, text size and notifications. If the words are too small, search Settings for Text Size.
Find and share photos
Open Photos. Choose a picture, tap the Share symbol and choose Mail or Messages. Check the recipient before sending. Photos may live on your phone, in iCloud Photos or both, depending on your settings.
Remove an unwanted app
Touch and hold the app icon and tap Remove App. Choose Delete App to uninstall it. Choosing Remove from Home Screen only hides its icon. Deleting an app does not necessarily cancel its subscription: check Settings > your name > Subscriptions.
Reduce unwanted alerts
Open Settings > Notifications and choose an app to control what it can show. Ads, notifications and actual installed apps are three different things; seeing a new ad does not mean an app was installed.
Three habits that help
- Use your trusted home Wi-Fi.
- Install software updates from Settings > General > Software Update.
- Keep your passcode and one-time verification codes private.
No panic: If a menu looks different, the iPhone model or iOS version may have changed its location. Search within Settings for the feature you need.
