Good tech earns its place by solving a problem. Start with what you need, check what you already have, and compare the details before spending money.
Before You Buy Anything
- Name the problem. “My video calls cut out in the upstairs office” gives you a clearer target than “I need better tech.”
- Try a fix first. A setting, update, or connection problem may be the real cause. Start with our troubleshooting guides.
- Check the exact model. Similar names can hide different ports, features, or included accessories.
- Compare the full cost. Include required accessories, delivery, and recurring charges.
- Read the seller’s terms. Check return deadlines, return shipping, restocking fees, warranty coverage, and who provides support.
Home & Wi-Fi
Before replacing a router, work out whether the problem is coverage inside your home or the connection from your internet provider.
Questions to Ask
- Does the problem happen near the router, or only in certain rooms?
- Can you improve placement or use a wired connection where practical?
- Will the equipment work with your provider’s modem or gateway?
- Does it have the ports, coverage options, and setup controls you need?
- What security updates and support does the manufacturer offer?
Mesh or one router? Mesh uses multiple units to extend coverage. It can help with awkward layouts, but extra units will not repair a provider outage. Check placement guidance and whether wired links between units are possible.

Smart-Home Gear
Check compatibility with your phone and existing smart-home system, whether a hub or subscription is required, and which features still work if the internet goes down.
Computers & Accessories
Choose for the work you actually do: web browsing, office tasks, creative work, gaming, or travel. Check the requirements of the apps you depend on.
Computer Checklist
- Will your essential software run on the operating system?
- Do storage and memory fit your workload, and can either be upgraded?
- Are the screen, keyboard, weight, and ports comfortable for daily use?
- For a used or refurbished device, what are the battery condition, return terms, and remaining software support?
Cables, Hubs, and Chargers
A connector’s shape does not tell you every capability. For USB-C accessories, check the device and accessory specifications for charging, display output, and data transfer. Confirm the required power and whether the charger or cable is included.
Monitors and Desk Accessories
Measure your desk and check the connections before ordering. For stands and mounts, verify fit and weight limits. Comfort and compatibility matter more than a long feature list.
Software & Services
Start with a task you need to accomplish. Check whether a tool you already own can do it before adding another subscription.
Subscription Checklist
- What does the price become after a trial or introductory offer?
- Is billing monthly or annual, and does it renew automatically?
- How do you cancel, and what happens to your files afterward?
- Can you export your data in a useful format?
- Which devices, users, and storage limits does the plan cover?
- What permissions and personal information does the service require?
If you try a service, test it with a real task before committing. Record the renewal date and cancellation instructions.

Password Managers: Free vs. Paid
A password manager can generate and remember unique passwords, but you may not need another subscription. Bitwarden Free is a no-cost option for storing logins across devices; 1Password offers paid individual and family plans with sharing features. Your browser or phone may already have a built-in password manager.
Compare recovery options, device support, family sharing, and renewal terms before buying. For a plain-English explanation and side-by-side starting points, read What Is a Password Manager? Free and Paid Options.

Windows Security: Before You Buy
Check your existing protection and decide which features you need before adding a subscription.
Choosing a Laptop
Match the computer to your apps, everyday tasks, and budget before comparing model names.
Cloud Backup: IDrive
IDrive vs. Windows File History: do you need both? Compare local and online copies before paying for a plan.
Considering an off-site backup service? IDrive is one option to compare. Start with the files you need to protect, then check the plan’s supported devices, storage limits, recovery features, and renewal price.
Read the 3-2-1 backup guide and cloud sync versus backup explanation before choosing. Keep a recoverable copy outside the same failure path, and practice restoring a file.

Look for the exact model, the reviewer’s use case, and any disclosed sponsorship. Compare several sources. A product that suits a reviewer’s needs may not suit yours.

PC cleanup: what I use and why
CCleaner is one of the tools Thomas uses for temporary files, startup items, and managing installed programs. It is optional; Windows also includes free cleanup tools.
