Computer Basics — No Panic Tech
Simple answers. One step at a time.
The parts you use
Computer: The machine that runs your programs. It may be a separate box, a laptop, or built into the monitor.
Monitor: The screen that shows what the computer is doing.
Mouse or trackpad: Moves the pointer. Click once to select; many desktop items open with a double-click. Website links usually need one click.
Keyboard: Types letters and numbers. Enter often confirms; Backspace deletes text behind the cursor.
The words you see
App: A program for a task, such as writing or making a video call.
Browser: An app for visiting websites. A search engine helps find them.
File: A saved item, such as a photo or document. A folder groups files.
Download: Bring a file from the internet onto your device.
Wi-Fi: A wireless connection to a nearby network. It does not guarantee internet access.
IP address: A network address that helps information reach the right destination.
Useful first steps
Copy and paste: Select the text. Windows: Ctrl+C to copy, Ctrl+V to paste. Mac: Command+C and Command+V.
Save: Use the app’s Save command. Some apps save automatically; check where your work is stored.
When something stops working: Read the message, save work if possible, and follow a guide. Restarting is different from a factory reset.
Stay safe: Pause before unexpected links or attachments. Never give someone your password or sign-in code.
