Computer basics, in plain English · Updated October 1, 2026
Someone says your photos are “in the cloud.” They are talking about computers, rather than something floating in the sky.
The simple answer
A cloud service uses computers you reach through the internet. Cloud storage lets you keep files on a service’s computers, called servers.
An everyday example
You take a picture on your phone. A photo service may upload a copy to its servers. Later, you sign into that service on your computer and see the picture there too.
Depending on your settings, the phone may keep a full copy, a smaller preview, or download the original when you need it.
What is an upload?
Upload means sending something from your device to an online service. Download means bringing something from that service to your device.
Think of uploading a photo as putting it in an online storage space, and downloading as bringing a copy back.
What is syncing?
Syncing keeps connected copies up to date. Change a synced document on one device, and the change may appear on your other devices.
That includes deletions. Removing a synced photo on your phone may remove it from the service and other connected devices too.
Is the cloud a backup?
Some services provide backup features, but cloud storage and syncing alone do not guarantee you can recover everything.
Check whether your service keeps deleted files or older versions, and for how long. Important files should have another recoverable copy. Test that you can actually open or restore that copy.
Do I need the internet?
You normally need a connection to upload new files or fetch files that are only online. Some apps let you mark files for offline use.
Seeing a filename or thumbnail does not always mean the full file is on your device. Open what you need while connected, and check the service’s offline settings before traveling.
What should I check?
- The account: Know which sign-in holds your files.
- The status: Check that uploads have finished.
- The space: Services often have storage limits.
- The sharing: Check who can view a shared file or link.
- The recovery: Know how to recover deleted items.
Before deleting photos to free space, find out whether Delete removes them everywhere. Use your service’s documented free-space feature if that is what you intend.
